A Committed Partnership

Brad and Erin Kuan live the values of literacy, volunteerism, and sports.

Brad grew up in a small town in a big sports family, where the local rink burnt down when he was about 13 years old. “Our big excitement after school was helping rebuild the rink,” he explains. “Getting involved is just what we did.”

As she was growing up, Erin also learned about volunteerism, and the love of books.

“My grandfather, who lived to 93, was so passionate about reading,” says Erin. His biggest concern before he passed away was what would happen to his books. Erin’s family donated his collection to the Melfort Library.

Erin carried that love of literacy into her family with Brad. “That was always our favourite time in our house, when the lights were dim, and it was quiet, and we cuddled up with our kids and read a book.”

Brad and Erin recognize that reading is second nature to them. But they also know not everyone’s life is like that, and how a lack of literacy skills can impede a person’s health or their participation in society.

“When I started as a tutor with READ Saskatoon, my learner asked me to help her fill in a health care form. Imagine trying to live independently and not being able to do that yourself,” says Erin.

Now, Erin is Secretary on the Board of READ Saskatoon, and Brad is in his second year as Chair of the READ Saskatoon PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy presented by Conexus Credit Union.

Volunteering for the PGI blends Brad’s passion for golf with his dedication to volunteerism. “It’s an awesome event,” says Brad. “The PGI is built on fun and a real sense of community around READ Saskatoon.”

Erin also feels a part of the READ Saskatoon community. ”The staff and volunteers are an incredible machine. I am in awe of what they are able to do.”

“One thing that excites me about volunteering is when you see progress,” says Erin. “READ Saskatoon is always innovating to reach as many people as possible and change their lives through literacy.”
