Workplace Essential Skills
Essential Skills are the skills needed for work, learning and life. These skills help to improve family and community and build a better future. Essential Skills allow us to grow and learn continuously throughout our lives, nurturing our body, mind, heart and spirit.
For the next two years, READ Saskatoon, with funding from the Office of Literacy and Essential Skills, will assist literacy volunteers and employers to incorporate Essential Workplace Skills portfolio development and training as a way of encouraging lifelong learning in the workplace. This partnership facilitates more successful workplaces with higher productivity and increased employee retention.
"I've improved my performance. Got a raise several times in five years. I can drive to work now that I've got a license." – Tim Marchant
"I communicate so much better. Before I didn't even want to take phone calls. My manager has told me that my English has improved a lot. He told me he couldn't’ understand me at all when I applied for the job. My relationships with my coworkers and supervisors have improved because we understand each other." – Meijuan Sun
"If you can't communicate outward, you can't communicate inward; if you can’t be understood, you can't contribute; and if you can't learn from others you can't teach." – Jon-Paul Suwala, SaskCulture
