Speed ScrabbleTM is a fast-paced variant of the popular board game, with some important differences:

  • No board. Your team creates a grid on the table surface
  • You do not play for point value. Instead, the object is to use all the tiles as quickly as possible.

University of Saskatchewan Students' Union and the U of S Learning Commons Partners Speed Scrabble™ Tournament with all funds raised supporting READ Saskatoon and the Saskatchewan Intercultural Association.

In this tournament, there will be sixteen teams of four people each competing for the title of “Speed ScrabbleTM Champion” and other prizes.

Here’s how to play speed scrabble.

Each team will have one complete set
of ScrabbleTM tiles.
Lay all the tiles face-down on the table
to form a draw pile.

Each team draws 5 tiles from the pile
and places them letter-side down.
When the referees make the announcement,
each team turns over its 5 tiles and play begins.
Players work together to use up all 5 tiles
in a crossword-like grid.

Once a team has used up all the tiles to form a grid,
one member of the group will sound the noisemaker,
indicating that all teams must draw
an additional two tiles.

Using new tiles along with the ones already
in their hand, teams continue to add to their grids.
Each time that a team uses all its tiles,
a member sounds the noisemaker,
and each team again draws 2 more tiles.

Note: Throughout the game, there will be referees present. A referee may tell you
whether a word is valid or not (by answering ‘yes’ or ‘no’), but may not suggest words or give hints.

Play continues with all teams building onto their grids.
Tiles can be rearranged as necessary to form
new words
– the grid is not fixed.

Play continues until one team has used all the tiles
in a single grid.
At this point, all four team members
will raise their hands.

A referee will check to see that all words are valid
before making a final call.

In the meantime, other teams may continue arranging their tiles. If one of these teams finishes,
they should raise their hands as well. In the case that the first team’s grid is not valid,
the first team will be disqualified, and a subsequent team will win.
