Facts about READ Saskatoon

  • READ Saskatoon began providing free literacy services in 1979 – that's more than 30 years of helping Saskatoon adults and families develop their literacy.
  • READ Saskatoon is a registered charity and non-profit organization.
  • READ Saskatoon is funded through government grants, as well as cash and in-kind service donations.
  • READ Saskatoon literacy programs and services are managed and provided by our staff and volunteers.
  • READ Saskatoon works with parents, teachers and others who work with children to help instill positive messages about literacy.
  • READ Saskatoon is active in the community. Each year, we host the PGI Golf Tournament for Literacy, founded by the late Peter Gzowski to help raise awareness of low literacy in Canadian communities.
  • READ Saskatoon supports literacy on a world-wide scale by participating in International Literacy Day and Family Literacy Day.
  • READ Saskatoon is an active member of Volunteer Saskatoon, the Saskatoon Labour Market Committee and the Saskatoon Literacy Coalition.

Each year:

  • 717 adult learners receive free literacy support from a literacy program and/or from a trained literacy tutor.
  • 208 trained volunteers provide over $500,000 of free literacy support to individuals and the community.
  • 1,200 children and 860 parents participated in free Family Literacy programs.
  • 400 staff from schools, preschools, daycares and community-based organizations received free Family Literacy training.
  • Workplace Literacy and Employee Development workshops were embraced and delivered at 18 Saskatoon businesses.
  • READ Saskatoon worked with 21 different funders (federal, provincial and municipal governments, philanthropists, foundations, businesses and corporations) to ensure free literacy supports are available to our community.
