Family Literacy Facilitator

Job Purpose

Working closely with the Program Manager and the Family Literacy Coordinator, the Family Literacy Facilitator is responsible for the facilitation and administration of READ Saskatoon’s family literacy initiatives. The facilitator delivers family literacy events and programs as well as additional family literacy initiatives. They attend community meetings relevant to job responsibilities. In addition, they provide guidance, support, resources, and tools to other literacy organizations in the province.

Major Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate and administrate family literacy initiatives
  • Adhere to the scope of the project and contract as negotiated between READ Saskatoon, and funders;
  • Create, review, and revise a detailed work plan which identifies and sequences the activities needed to successfully meet all outcomes and outputs determined by the project contract between READ Saskatoon and funders;
  • Monitor the program activities on a regular basis and conduct continuous and annual evaluation data according to the program evaluation framework;
  • Understand and work within the objectives and measures upon which the project will be evaluated at its completion;
  • Develop new initiatives to support the strategic direction of the organization;
  • Ensure that program activities operate within the policies and procedures of the organization;
  • Ensure that program activities comply with all relevant legislation and professional standards;
  • Ensure that the project deliverables are on time and at the required level of quality;
  • Ensure evaluation data is entered in a timely manner;
  • Maintain forms and records to document program activities and volunteer activities;
  • Develop and implement effective strategies to recruit family literacy participants who meet agency guidelines/criteria;
  • Oversee collection and maintenance of family literacy client records for statistical purposes while adhering to confidentiality and privacy policies of READ Saskatoon;
  • Allow a reasonable amount of time to ensure data collection and evaluation is completed. This means no programming during December or June;
  • Knowledge of current trends, resources and information related to needs of READ Saskatoon adult learners;
  • Coordinate family literacy events, workshops or additional learning opportunities for clients;
  • Work with the Program Manager to evaluate the outcomes of the project as established during the planning phase;
  • Coordinate program support staff and volunteers according to the established policies and practices of the organization;
  • Train family literacy volunteers and ensure proper screening is completed prior to utilizing them;
  • Set up files to ensure that all project information is appropriately documented and secured;
  • Identify volunteer assignments that provide meaningful work for volunteers.

 

  1. Coordinate and deliver family literacy programming and events
  • Work with community partners to deliver events and programs throughout the community that meet our target demographics;
  • Facilitate programs with parents and children;
  • Prepare program materials;
  • Document project activities by monitoring the progress of the project and adjust as necessary to ensure the successful completion of the project activities
  • Gather data, program evaluations and personal anecdotes. Ensure data is entered into databases on a regular basis;
  • Establish a communication schedule to update stakeholders including appropriate staff in the organization on the progress of the project;
  • Review the quality of the work completed with the project team on a regular basis to ensure that it meets the project standards and expectations of READ Saskatoon.

 

  1. Administrative Functions
  • Write monthly, interim and final reports on the project for management and for funders;
  • Identify and evaluate the risks associated with program activities and take appropriate action to control the risks;
  • Report evaluation findings to the Program Manager and recommend changes to enhance the program, as appropriate.

 

Qualifications

Education and Certification Criteria

  • University degree, education or experience in a related subject
  • Certificate in the Introduction to Family Literacy
  • Certificate in Volunteer Management is an asset
  • Valid Saskatchewan Driver’s License
  • Current Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Search

 

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Experience in program management;
  • Facilitation experience with Adults and children together;
  • Understanding and appreciation of cultural adaptation;
  • Ability to monitor and assess learning progress and provide objective feedback on achievements and learning process;
  • Proven skill at developing positive and collaborative working relationships with a variety of individuals to support learning;
  • History of establishing and maintaining relationships with clients while setting appropriate boundaries and acting as a role model;
  • Knowledge of program coordination and event planning;

 

Experience

  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in a related field
  • Experience in Adult Basic Education
  • Ability to facilitate adult and family literacy programs and workshops
  • Prior experience in working with parents, preschool children, toddlers and infants
  • Knowledge of early childhood and adult learning principles
