Literacy and Literature Collide for the Good of the Community

Media Advisory – Telling Stories and Story Telling

Saskatoon, April 18, 2018 – On Thursday, May 10th at the Broadway Theatre, four Saskatchewan authors will donate their time for the good of literacy.

Last year was the inaugural year for Telling Stories & Storytelling. This year, Louise Halfe, Arthur Slade, Gail Bowen, and Amy Jo Ehman will read from their work, along with several READ Saskatoon clients who have their own stories to tell. Shelagh Rogers, the CBC’s The Next Chapter host, will oversee this celebration of literacy and the power of the written word. All proceeds from this fundraising event will go to READ Saskatoon.

Sheryl Harrow-Yurach, READ Saskatoon’s Executive Director, notes that these kinds of events raise the profile of the agency, but more importantly, help people better understand the need for community literacy programs: “READ Saskatoon is committed to making a difference for Saskatoon individuals and families by ensuring they have the tools, knowledge and assistance to build literacy skills at every age level,” said Harrow-Yurach.
One person who understands this is Constance Thompson, one of READ Saskatoon’s literacy coaches, “Learning is an ongoing process that continues throughout our lives, and adult learners are perhaps the greatest example of this. I have enjoyed watching learners make progress. It is wonderful to see the growth and change a learner can experience because of their efforts.”

Bill Waiser, winner of the 2106 Governor General’s Award for Non-Fiction and co-organizer of the event, believes that storytelling highlights the importance of literacy. He has close memories of the adults in his family telling stories for many hours and reminds us that “There are countless ways that stories are part of our day--whether over coffee or a drink, during intimate moments with children, or just catching up with a family member or friend.”

So, take a moment, think of your favourite story and let it inspire you to purchase a ticket and support literacy.
