Our Journey Towards Reconciliation
READ Saskatoon is honoured to be on Treaty 6 territory – the traditional lands of the Cree, Saulteaux, Dene, Dakota, Lakota, Nakota and Métis nations. We acknowledge that many have come before us and we hope to be respectful partners and stewards of this land during our time here.
READ Saskatoon works toward education equity with a commitment to Indigenous peoples through community literacy programming. We pay special attention to TRC calls to action, 7, 10, and 12, and our work is guided by the needs of the community and engages volunteers.
At the heart of our work we recognize that literacy is about relationship: relationship between volunteer and learner/student, relationship between student and our agency, relationship between student and their world, and relationship between our agency and the larger community. In the words of Paulo Freire, literacy is about reading the world and reading the word. Literacy is liberation education.
We have experience working with clients on real education matters, which in turn, help advance access to education in Saskatoon and Saskatchewan. We also provide opportunity to learn in a collaborative, supported environment. Our model strives to demonstrate that educators, whether they are parents, teachers, family members, or friends, must ensure that racism, both overt and covert, is not part of our lexicons and behaviours, and that it has no place in our children’s lives either.
Literacy builds families and families build communities. As a local literacy organization working outside the regular education system we know our influence is small, but we can be a part of the solution. In our work, we strive to honour Justice Senator Murray Sinclair. He has been vocal about how education is the key to walking on the journey of reconciliation and we believe, like Justice Senator Sinclair, that “education is the means by which we will be able to fix this.”
We hope this recognition inspires you to look further into the treaty system and the long vibrant history of traditional Indigenous lands. For our part, we consider how we can better treat each other and fulfill the spirit of the Treaty 6 agreement.
